Folkfaces is a group out of Buffalo, NY that plays a rowdy blend of rootsy Folk, Jazz, and Blues – fusing classic forms with contemporary feelings and irresistibly danceable energy. Their inspiration comes from the mountains of Appalachia to the deltas of Mississippi, the swamps of Louisiana to the Concrete Jungle of the Rustbelt. Specializing in merriment and sticking it to the system, Folkfaces make the crowd dance and the hierarchy shatter.
The North Star String Band formed in 2016 when pickers from several bands playing American roots music joined forces for what they believed to be a one-off gig. Brian Tomaszewski (banjo), Mark Martin (bass) and Brian Sheldon (guitar) had played together for years as the Cottage Pickers when they welcomed Matt Sauer (guitar, of String Theory) and Dan Walpole (mandolin, of the Ruckus Juice Jug Stompers) to the fold. The chemistry was enough to keep them playing together, and a new band was born. Taking a nod from Rochester’s rich local history, they dubbed themselves the North Star String Band.
The band’s repertoire draws from traditional influences like Bill Monroe and Flatt & Scruggs, as well as musicians who have carried the bluegrass, newgrass and jamgrass torches since then (John Hartford, Del McCoury, Sam Bush, Yonder Mountain String Band, The Infamous Stringdusters). The North Star String Band also mixes original compositions, jug band, and mainstream popular music into their high-energy, entertaining performances that leave venues and fans asking for them again.
